The Association
“Together we aspire together we achieve“
In August 1968, five women, with a vision of the guiding principle for friendship and service founded this organization. These five women were Phyllis Mills, RN (President 1969-1972, 1979-1980), Gloria Rose Eddy, RN (President 1973-1974), Sylma Nelson, RN Matjory Jeffrey, RN, and Kirby Theodore, RN. Combined, these women saw it fit to come together in Brooklyn, NY to create this association. Sylma Nelson is still an active member.
The Association is self governing and nonprofit, it operates under the guidelines of its constitution and by laws. Its executive board sets policies and makes decisions for the Association. A number of committees along with the general membership assist with the formulation and execution. TTNAA, Inc. relies on volunteers to adrninister its functioning.
Over the years we have worked tirelessly to build on this legacy, through the successful biennial one-day health conference since 1979, and also works in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Registered Nurses Âssociation in coordinating five-day quadrennial conferences in Trinidad and Tobago since, 1983. Community service remains integral to the function of the Association, with this in mind there is participation in health fairs also annual monetary donations are made to charitable organizations in the USA; donation of hospital/medical equipment to Trinidad and Tobago, also it contributes (as needed), to natural disaster aid relief to other Caribbean countries. To the nationals and the descendents of Trinidad and Tobago who are pursuing a degree in nursing (in New York), who demonstrate a financial need, and also meet the Association’s criteria, scholarship grant awards are offered annually. lndeed the membership was honored when the TTNAA, inc. was recognized by The Consulate General of the Republic of trinidad and Tobago in New York; with an award for its contribution to Education and health (2014).
